January and February are the perfect months to curl up with a warm drink and some fresh Serbian lessons - and I have put together something special to make the most of this cozy season. The Winter Special Edition adds a brand-new set of easy, fun lessons to all four online courses, and I think you are going to love them. They are built around a theme that is surprisingly useful and endlessly entertaining: horoscopes.

Whether you are in Serbian 101 as a complete beginner or working through Serbian 201 at an advanced level, there is a Winter Special lesson waiting for you. Read on to find out exactly what has been added and why these lessons are such a good idea for your Serbian progress.

What is the Winter Special?

The Winter Special Edition is a series of easy Serbian horoscope lessons that have been added to all of the online courses - Serbian 101, 102, 103, and 201 - and will be available throughout January and February. Each lesson uses a horoscope sign as its starting point and teaches you to speak about yourself naturally in Serbian, as a man or as a woman, and across different tenses.

This is more useful than it might sound at first! In Serbian, adjectives and past-tense verbs change depending on the grammatical gender of the speaker, which means that a sentence like "I was happy" is said differently by a man and a woman. The horoscope context gives you a warm, personal reason to practise both forms until they feel natural - because you are talking about yourself, your sign, your personality, and your future.

A preview of the lesson slides

Here is a look at the first Capricorn lesson slide, which gives you a feel for the layout and vocabulary level of the Winter Special series:

And here is the second slide from the same lesson, which introduces more vocabulary and builds on the structures from the first slide:

The slides are clear, colourful, and designed to be usable by learners at every level within each course. Vocabulary is glossed in English, and the Serbian text appears in both the Latin and Cyrillic scripts where relevant.

Which courses include the Winter Special?

The new horoscope lessons have been added to all four online courses in the series:

No matter which course you are enrolled in, your Winter Special lessons are calibrated to your level, so you will be challenged without being overwhelmed.

Why horoscope lessons?

Horoscope texts are a goldmine for language learners because they are written in warm, direct, personal language - exactly the register you need for real conversation. They are full of adjectives that describe personality (strpljiv - patient, marljiv - hardworking, kreativna - creative), future-tense constructions (bićeš srećan - you will be happy), and first-person reflective statements (ja sam ambiciozna - I am ambitious).

Most importantly, because a horoscope talks about you specifically, you have a genuine personal reason to engage with every sentence - and that emotional connection is one of the most powerful accelerants for language learning that exists.

More Serbian examples

Here is a rich set of Serbian sentences in the spirit of the Winter Special lessons. Notice the masculine and feminine forms side by side - this is exactly the kind of parallel practice the horoscope lessons are designed to give you.

Serbian (Latin) English
Ja sam roden u januaru. (m.) I was born in January. (male speaker)
Ja sam rodena u januaru. (f.) I was born in January. (female speaker)
Moj znak je Jarac. My sign is Capricorn.
Ja ću biti srećan ove godine. (m.) I will be happy this year. (male speaker)
Ja ću biti srećna ove godine. (f.) I will be happy this year. (female speaker)
Bio sam strpljiv juče. (m.) I was patient yesterday. (male speaker)
Bila sam strpljiva juče. (f.) I was patient yesterday. (female speaker)
Ja sam ambiciozan covek. (m.) I am an ambitious person. (male speaker)
Ja sam ambiciozna osoba. (f.) I am an ambitious person. (female speaker)
Moj horoskop kaze da ću putovati. My horoscope says I will travel.

The key takeaway from this table is that Serbian past-tense forms and many adjectives agree with the grammatical gender of the subject. For a male speaker, the past-tense form ends in -o or -ao (e.g. bio, roden), while for a female speaker it ends in -la or -a (e.g. bila, rodena). The horoscope lessons give you a relaxed, enjoyable way to drill this distinction until it becomes second nature.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be enrolled in a course to access the Winter Special?

Yes - the Winter Special horoscope lessons are added directly to the online course materials for Serbian 101, 102, 103, and 201. If you are already enrolled in any of these courses, simply log in and you will find the new lessons waiting for you.

Are the lessons available in both scripts?

Yes - materials appear in both Latin and Cyrillic script, so you can use the Winter Special to practise whichever script you are currently working on (or both!).

What if I am not a Capricorn?

The Capricorn lesson is the first in the series, but lessons for all twelve signs are being developed and added throughout January and February. By the end of the Winter Special period, there will be a lesson for every sign.

Why do adjectives change for male and female speakers?

Serbian is a grammatical-gender language, which means that nouns, adjectives, and past-tense verbs all carry gender information. This is one of the features that makes Serbian feel complex at first, but the horoscope context makes it easier because you already know your own gender - so you always have a clear, personal reason to choose one form over the other.

Can I use these lessons even if I am not in the January-February session?

The materials are available to all enrolled learners at any time, so even if you are reading this later in the year, the Winter Special lessons will still be there in your course dashboard.

---

I hope the Winter Special brings some extra warmth and lightness to your Serbian practice this January and February. Horoscopes are a small, fun thing, but the grammar they carry is genuinely important - and I think you will be surprised by how much you learn while enjoying yourself. Sretan put! (Happy journey!)
